The first thing the reader notices about Martin's Big Words is that it is accessible to young children. The vivid collages and large text invite them into Dr. King's world. While children may be to young to know the word "discrimination," many have observed it or  experienced it themselves. The artwork is spectacular and Ms. Rappaport tells Dr. King's story so clearly, so passionately, that the reader can only be amazed at the history of discrimination in this country or the reality that discrimination continues today. We must teach our children-early-that hatred is wrong. Ms. Rappaport and Mr. Collier do a marvelous job of providing an opportunity to begin teaching that truth. The 40-page book is appropriate for readers who are four to nine years old.
